It sounds like you either have a thrown braker, (this is caused by too much current running through it and not enough amp on the braker), or you have a short, ( a loose wire running to the electrical box). The braker may look like it is on, but you actually have to switch it off and switch it back on. If this does not work call a professional. If you do not know what you're doing it is dangerous to work on it yourself.

Perhaps there is a subpanel somewhere that feeds tha back half of the house. If you cannot find such a thing, it is probably time to call in an expert. There are special tools availabe which can find open circuits, but they should be used only by knowledgeable people. One possibility: if there is a split phase service (standard in North America) and one of the phases has gone open because of a wire failure, and if the back half of the house is fed from only that phase (this would be unusual), repairing the wire may be necessary; it will probably be necessary to open the meter box to do so. (This happened to me once; the wires from the meter to the main breaker box had been aluminum and I replaced them with copper.)

I'm not sure about Australia but it sounds like you've lost one of your feeds to the house. I assume you have 2 110V circuits that will make 220V
Normally that is what happens when you lose half of your service.

check your circuit breaker and see if there are colored orange or yellow in small windows found near switches. if there are, move the switches back and forth until the color changes. if it still does not work, call your electicity provider before your house catches fire and burns down.

Maybe your wiring is messed up. If you start to smell burnt wiring then get the hell out of there!
