I have seen one savage another pet to near death (it had to be put to sleep) and he also chased the boy down the block. So I ask, what can be gotten to protect yourself from these savage beasts. Maybe there is a good few here and there, but I have not seen any nice pit bull. I have heard former pit bull owners talk about these dogd are insane, and they owned one, but one day it snapped. Anyone else?

I knew two very wonderful Pitts. The mama drowned in a lake when my friends took her out swimming and she was use to swimming. Nobody can figure out why she drowned. Her name was Hennessie. She had a son and daughter born to her a year before she died. The male was so gentle and one time a neighbor's Pitt jumped him and tore off his ear. She was trianed that way. It's all in how they are treated and trained when they are young.

You saw one animal attack another and now all of that breed are insane and savage. It is a good thing we don't talk about people that way isn't it. 99% of pit bulls are fine. If they are raised with love and kindness then that is how they will be. Most pits I have seen might lick you to death but that is about the extent of it. However, dogs are not people and we do not understand all their behaviors. Did the fight with another dog occur on the pits property? Did the pit initiate the fight? Pits are territorial and will fight to protect their territory and the members of their pack (family). Perhaps the other dog was aggressive and started the fight. You either do not know or did not say. I have seen so many well-behaved pits and happy satisfied owners. These dogs are intelligent, gentle giants not savage beasts.

NO no. Pit bulls don't just snap. I have worked wtih dogs all my life, and no dog just snaps. There is always a reason for it. I have met aggressive dogs of all breeds. And I have also met nice dogs of all breeds. When a dog is aggressive there is always a reason for it. First of all, I hope the boy got away, I hope nothing happened to him. But the fact that the dog was out and able to chase a boy down the block shows that this owner is irrisponsible. I own a pit bull, I know to NEVER let her off leash if she is not in a complete fenced in area. My dog loves everyone, kids, adults, dogs, cats. But because she is a strong dog, I would NEVER want anything to happen, so she is always restrained. And also, anyone who owns a pit bull SHOULD be aware that they can sometimes be dog aggressive, especially if not properly socialized and trained from a young age. This person should have never let their dog around another dog unsupervised.

Reasons dogs can become aggressive: Some people train their dog to be aggressive, some people abuse their dog. Some neglect their dog so it gets NO socialization with people and other animals, so it becomes aggresssive. And some people who are not bad people, and don't neglect or abuse their dog, but they don't train or socialize their dog. Then when it meets another dog or person, they wonder why it is aggressive. And then there are the people who neglect the fact that their dog IS aggressive. I was attacked by a GOLDEN RETRIEVER who left scars on my face. After this dog attacked me, the owner said that he has done this before, but neglected to tell me, and also neglected to correct the problem. She just let the dog run around, knowing it was aggressive. And my brother has a vicious dachshund. This little dog will go after ANYONE! My brother knew this dog was mean, but his thoughts were "She is too small to do any damage." or "She is just bluffing." That was until the dog bit a small child on the lip, and made her bleed. AND Sadie bit my PIT BULL on the nose. Sadie is lucky that my pit bull was properly raised, and she just backed away. Now my 50 pound dog is affraid of Sadie, who is 8 pounds.

The last reason I can think a dog who is not aggressive would bite is if it felt threatened or got hurt. I once read a story about a family labradore that had to be euthanized because it bit their child 'out of no where.' After the dog was euthanized, the technician found a pencil jammed down in the dog's ear drum. The dog didn't bite for no reason, it was hurt. This is why dogs and children should never be left alone unattended.

So back to pit bulls being aggressive, they are not by nature. I have worked with dogs all of my life, and I have met Hundreds of sweet pit bulls. They are my favorite breed of dog, completely misunderstood. People abuse pit bulls and use them for fighting, and bad owners who want an aggressive dog often choose pit bulls, rottweilers, dobermans because they are indimiating strong dogs. But this does not mean that this is a bad breed, or aggressive by nature. A dog's temperment depends on how it is raised by it's owners.

I have been attacked by a pit bull and i can tell you, it hurts
I am sure every pit bull owner will tell you it a lovely dog and would not harm a fly just like the one that attacked me
the owner even had the cheek to blame me saying it must have been something i had done but i never even looked at it
oh well it was an experience

A woman in our area was attacked and killed by her own pit bull and her family said it was a friendly dog. I don't think the dead owner would agree.

My pit bull is 9 years old and has never bitten anyone, he also loves children. He has been raised with a lot of love, he is a damn good dog and smart to. It's not the dog that is the problem it's their owners and how they raise them.
