Have you no heart? People can be scared. Or alone. They might have been abandoned by the father and are struggling, or they might have no family to ask, or like someone said, they might be a teenager who feels alone.

Mothers, and soon-to-be-mothers, for centuries have turned to each other for help and advice, because the only people who can really answer some of the questions a mother needs to know are other mothers. You don't expect to be judged by other mothers when you ask for their help or advice because we're all in it for the same thing, and we all want the same thing for our children.
Sure, there's doctors, councillors, all kinds of specialises, but is it really surprising that mothers turn to other mothers when they need real experts?

And I remember asking the 'can I get pregnant if I have unprotected sex' when I was a teenager, in a chat room, with people screaming at me that I was stupid. Come on. We're talking about girls who are learning about all of this, women who are learning to understand their child, probably even women who are suffering from post-natal depression and need the reassurance of other people's wisdom to help them get through it.

Please try and remember that people ask questions because they want to know the answer, these people asking the questions WANT to stop being ignorant and want to be informed!

Be angry with the ones that -aren't- here asking the questions they don't know the answers to. They're the ones that scare me.

It is a bit scary with some of the questions, they do seem to indicate a REAL low level of knowledge, but having said that I am pleased that people who for whatever reason aren't sure of something can see what other people think.
The downside of a publicly contributed place like this is that some of the answerers are a little brutal with their answers. Imagine a scenario of a 14 or 15 year old, little schooling, parents not approachable for whatever reason, different answers from her peers, decides to ask on yahoo if you can get preggers the first time - a sensible, sensitive answer could mean everything to that girl, enabling her to start making the right choices in her life. A "of course u can u stupid girl" , or "don't have sex ur too young etc etc" answer does about as much to help her as her upbringing/education did.

Another problem is that some of the questions might not be worded very expertly or be detailed enough.
How do I know if my baby is hungry? might mean (to the asker) "cos all his cries sound the same" "cos he still cries even when i've fed him" etc

Sorry but while I agree that some of the questions are very basic I would have to say that if your attitude is so lacking in compassion perhaps you should find another category to answer questions in.

I think that it is better to ask a silly question than do something silly.
Although, it is amazing how some people are SO un educated on sex and babies etc, like asking if you can get pregnant through oral sex, I would have thought that with the internet and sex education in school that people would know these things.
But hey, thats what sites like these are for, so they can ask questions, and find out the answers, regardless of how silly the question may seem, to the person asking the qestion its not silly at all!
