Communication means transferring the one's ideas to the others. It can only be done provided several conditions complied.

First, there must be the sender(s) and the receiver(s). It means the one is intended to transmit the message to the others. On the other hand, there must be the ones who are willing to receive the message. The main component of these intention and willingness is the social recognition among the people. The people know that they must communicate with each other in order to live in the society.

Second, in order to smooth the process of communication, both the sender and the receiver must have the knowledge of the background of each other in some degree, so that the appropriate skills and forms can be used. The background usually is referring to the person's social status. It also constitutes different kind of relationship between people in the society.

Third, the communication itself is a mean of holding people together. People who can communicate with their fellows become part of them. The one who cannot will be isolated. It constitute different groups in the society. However, these groups affect each other by the functions provided by themselves. This can always seen in the social environment.

I think that this refers to the communication between individuals, and how it is used socially. This would refer to the exchange of words, actions, etc between people and the effect that it has on them, both positively and negatively.

Communications as an act by a person, rather than transmitted by a machine.

But then, I could be completely off base.
