oooopppsss! i'm apparently older than the previous answerers so I can probably give a first hand information based on my own experience since I spent all my childhood during Marcos iron-fisted era. I beg to disagree with them! Life back then was miserably harder and I believe it is the worst period in post war Philippines.

1. I've learned about freedom of speech only after Ninoy was murdered. All you hear, see and read in the media are fairy tales. Today, you have all.
2. There was no opposition to speak of. Killings and disappearances are no news because they happen everyday. Now, opposition is alive and kicking and nauseatingly annoying or annoyingly nauseating.
3. My parents can't afford to provide us 3 decent meals a day
even though they do back breaking work 12 hours a day. It's still difficult today but my observation now is that children and families now are better fed.
4. Education is not afforded to all especially public high school and tertiary levels.
5. Infrastructure are all cosmetics and not truly benefitting the bigger sector of the society. Why Marcos built the CCP? Folk Arts Center? Experimental Cinema of the Phils? etc.
6. Major industries and business are monopolized by his cronies.
The list never ends. Comparatively, GMA, FVR, Cory and Erap's governments may or are full of follies. They may be inept, corrupt and, shall I say, failures but at least they all made you feel FREE.
NB. Also, you can not ask that question during Marcos years.

I agree with the previous two entries. I was born on the tailend of the Martial Law era and from what my very young mind back then could see, it was a twisted era worse than the present administration. I call it the era of massive political 'window dressing'. I remember sirens signalling curfew at 10 p.m.

My young mind then registered an era of subtle but unmistakable fear. Be thankful that we can all rant now about those tacky overpriced 'toilet bowl cover' lampposts in Cebu. It's an annoying, superficial issue, but take note that even that kind of criticism couldn't be done very openly back then.

Never allow one person that much power again.

i'm not a martial baby but based on the oldies, they say that the arroyo regime compared with that of the marcos regime is pretty much the same.but marcos was more blatant and open through the imposition of martial martial law while arroyo does it through various secretive ways- remember how human rights abuses have escalated lately?

Agree with morning_breath. The bottom line is that the method is different but the victims are the same.
