Build your own from scratch- nothing and I mean nothing is more stable than you own custom-made PC. I build these for clients all the time- contact me if you want a quote. However, you are looking at chasis, motherboard, CPU, fans, PS, HDs, video card(s), monitor, KVM, etc. The price we pay for stability and expansion far outweighs the inferior product you pay for from Dell, HP, or Gateway.

well alienware is very expensive, but for 1400(a little less) you can get a dell with such specs:
-2.4 or 2.6 ghz core 2 duo(same speed as alienware i assume)
-2 gb of ram in 2 dimms(so you can add more if needed)
-250 gb hard drive(good amount)
-256 mb atx raedon(i'd say thats pretty damn good, but if not you can sell it online and upgrade to a better one.
and it should come with a nice screen and a warranty.

if you want an amd processor(i wouldnt reccomend) it will become even cheaper, and would end up about 1200$

i think dell is good and it has a good waranty,, at least 2 years(i recommend you pay the extra 50$ or whatever and get 3 1\2 year warranty)
dell wbsite here:configure to your liking
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DXCWNF1&s=dhs

if you want something even cheaper of a less known brand this could work
i built you a custom new computer on ebay with a warranty and you should check it out.
-2.4 ghz core 2 duo
-.300 gb hard drive
-256 atx raedon pro video card
-2gb of ram in 2 dimms(more can be added)
-basically everything the dell has for only 1100$
its exchanging a good wararanty and customer service and a good known brand(i have been using dell for 10 years now) for a custom built computer with only a 1 year warranty.

Do not go with alienware. They are so overpriced its unbelievable. The best thing to do is to get a custom made PC with good parts. Try finding a good computer shop near you that will do this for you. You can save tons of money by doing this. I've also found that some of the PC's on ebay are very well priced and are good deals.

Sounds like you need to go to "Buildyourownpc.com" and consider building your own gaming machine. Also WWW.Tigerdirect.com has barebones kits that are a good start for building a good gaming machine. Fast downloads are more a product of your phone line or cable speed and ISP than the computer at your end. My DSL speed quadrupled when the technician replaced my DSL line (about a quarter mile of phone line) with new heavier phone line.

I have never had any problems with the compaq from walmart and you can get the basics for under $500 now. I would recommend upgrading the ram. But you can always do that later on when u have extra money.

if you're looking for a desktop, go with gateway and get it from best buy... I bought a $635 gateway and I run SQL Server on a windows 2003 server platform and 900 users connect for a second every hour and it still runs my internal database great!

HP or Toshiba..Toshiba I believe is cheaper..I like the HP better. I own 2 hp's, one Toshiba, one Sony Vaio, but those are pricey, depending.
