Amsterdam has not really changed that much over the years, especially in the Damrak area which is the city centre. Yes, there are some modern buildings etc here and there around the city but its topography makes drastic changes impossible.

The Netherlands is a wonderful land to visit and you may wish to start your trip from Amsterdam, taking in the Madame Tussaud's, Red Light District and the diamond factories as well as canal rides and the museums. Alkmaar is the cheese market place nearby.

Nederlandse Spoorwegen- the national railways, connects Amsterdam with other cities and Rotterdam- a city that was fully devastated in World War-II is also worth a visit. Dont forget Den Haag or The Hague and its wonderful beach at Scheveningen, the Madurodam and other sites and all cities are just about a couple of hours ride, at the most, from the capital.

Also of interest are the Heineken factory in Amsterdam or elsewhere, tulip gardens and milk farms.

The Netherlands is an extremely interesting place to visit. But its a bit pricey, thanks to the Euro and taxation. Also, you'll have to beware of certain elements who are NOT necessarily Dutch and target foreign tourists for thefts and pick-pocketing.

Above all--dont forget to taste that wonderful Dutch food, especially freshwater fish made in that authentic way.
