You should try the western coast... this is where I live, and I love it...

There is a small hotel next to the beach in Tamarin Bay, it is quiet, the service is not bad and the prices 'affordable'. If you enjoy surfing, there's a spot right in front of the hotel. There is also a small boat tour which bring you to see the dolphins, and in the south west, you can go to l'Ile au Benitier which has a wonderful view on the Morne... The food is great everywhere here...

The most popular area however is Grand Bay, in the north, if you enjoy night life, it is the place to be. But I think its too crowded, and too 'tourist oriented'...

Recently, new hotels have opened in the south, really luxurious, peaceful, and they aim at high class visitors. I've not yet visited them, but the pictures are 'Oh my God!!!' if you see what I mean... The south is also a nice place to visit, it probably the only place that still looks like Mauritius in the 1800...

Choose the west!

There's some excellent suggestions here.

You might want to compliment this by contacting the National Tourism Office for Mauritius who answer these and other similar questions for a living via this link: http://www.tourismrankings.com/Mauritius/

Also when you have an idea of where you want to stay, compare it to the deals available on these websites:

I hope this is helpful

it depends on what you are looking for. u can go on www.servihoo.com and there's an array of hotels, places of interests, shopping places etc. but wherever u choose to stay, it won't take u long to move around. if u stay in the north, it'll take u about 15-20 minutes to get to the city centre. if u stay in the south, it would take u longer. but there are a lot of places to see in the southern part. in the north, it's mainly beaches. u should really try to go to one of the small islands, like ile aux cerfs or benitier island. there's plenty of baots that go to these islands for a day.
hope u enjoy ur stay
