to be a psychologist it is necessary to have either a PHD or a professional degree (a Psy-D). This involves lots of research and theories and are the two highest degrees one can get. psychologists frequently treat people with severe emotional difficulties. They also can publish papers and be taken seriously. They can be 'academics' in addition to being psychotherapists.

To be a counselor it is only necessary to have a masters, although one is always free to study more and become a psychologist. a counselor is trained extensively in psychotherapeautic techniques. However, counselors are more likely to work with people with milder psychological disturbances (e.g., depressed students rather than schizophrenics). psychologists will have done a lot more research, will have a more general base of knowledge, and will have spent more time on the theory behind the therapy and will thus be more respected as an academic, researcher, and writer. However, with all that said, at the end of the day the counselor might be a lot better at actually helping everyday people cope with their problems.

A psychiatrist is something totally different. psychiatry is a subbranch of plain old general medicine. These are people that know the biology and neurology really well and have a slant towards wanting to help people. They are not trained primarily in psychology or counseling. they are doctors. they can prescribe drugs, but generally aren't as good with people because they have neither the counseling training nor the psychological theory.

It's all a matter of degrees and training. To me, they all do the same thing. Talk to you and help you work out your problems. However, a psychiatrist went to medical school and can prescribe medication.
