The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.
I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
* How to Really Start Your Own Business, Fourth Edition by David E. Gumpert
* How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan: Step-by-Step Guide by David E. Gumpert
* What No One Ever Tells You about Starting Your Own Business: Real-Life Start-Up Advice from 101 Successful Entrepreneurs (What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business) by Jan Norman
* Business Start-Up Kit by Steven D. Strauss
* Start Your Own Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Rieva Lesonsky
There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

It's great that you have an idea for a business. Funding should not be an issue for you if you have a good business system. Money always follows good business management and good business systems.
What I would suggest you do is to take a course via community college on how to start a small business, so you can get a rough idea of what it takes to do that.
Afterwards, you will have to do market research to determine if your idea for selling goods or services is a marketable or financially lucrative endeavor. After you do market research and are convinced that your business has a great chance of succeeding, then you do a business plan.
Your business plan will include your marketing plan that you made after market research. You will also have to include your start-up financial forecasts, your forecasts for business financials(e.g sales) and most importantly cashflow forecast.
Hire an accountant to help you with financial forecasts.
If your idea is great, your business plan convinces lenders that you have a good business system and your financial forecasts convinces them that your business will turn profits, quickly, easily and efficiently, there will be a lot of lenders e.g banks, venture capitalists or angel investors willing to offer you start-up capital.
Once you get the capital, then you must get a tax lawyer or a tax accountant to help you determine and organize, which business-tax structure would be the best for you to run your business. Afterwards, register and do all the necessary legal and tax stuff, then you're ready to start your business. Seek out mentors that have succeeded in business and esp. the kind you want to start. Find out what they did and learn from them. Success in business is an exact science, a formula. Do what those who have succeeded did, of course, do what is legal. Follow the formulae of successful business poeple.
The main thing for you to do now is to get educated about starting, running and maintaining a business. Seek out mentors that can Remember profits and cashflow are key to the survival of your business. All the best.

How are you fellow Texan, and fellow ex-Army. I know where you're coming from on this. My suggestion from experience is to get in touch with the Small business Administration (SBA)here in Texas (1-800-827-5722), and they can be a great help to you.
They can also get you hooked up with the set-aside program for women and minorities.
The SBA can also get you in touch with SCORE, which is the service corps of retired executives. SCORE is a helpful organization of successful business owners whom have retired now, and help other people out starting, running, and making a profit in a new business.
Hope this helps. Let me know how everything goes, and get with me if you think I can be of any further assistance.

Anyone can start a business. If it is small and doesnt have much risk of being sued, you can run the business using your own name. It is much cheaper this way. If you have a business name (other than your actual name) you must register it as a business name and pay a fee.
A company is a structure that businesses can be run through. A company is a seperate legal entity and has limited liability. To setup a company you must pay a fair bit in associated setup costs.

Go to the local SBA. They can help. THey might help find you a person with experience to figure out how to uild your own company. I think the program is called score. SBA might help with getting loans and grants. YOu might look for venture capital groups for money too, but I doubt it for your situation.
