Molecular shape is important because that can determine whether or not a molecule can fit into a receptor. Think of it this way: You have two feet, and they are effectively just alike. However, your right shoe won't fit your left foot, or vice versa; and neither one will fit in your gloves! The same is true of molecules; they have to have the right shape to fit into the receptors in cells and in other situations.
