Well, what you do is use FULL synthetic motor oil for the engine. You can go to walmart and they like sell the 5 quart bottle for the price of 4 quarts. Other places are cheap, but then get real. Are you really going to mail in that rebate?

I got a 92 Ford Explorer with 220,000 + miles on it. The first year, I used regular oil and then after that it was synthetic all the way. With synthetic you are supposed to do an oil change every 6 months. But I do mine once a year, BUT change the oil filter every two or three months. Reason is, to keep the oil as clean as possible.

Regular oil breaksdown after about 12,000 miles. Synthetic breaks down after 60,000 miles. Do the math. Hmmm, personally, I think it is a oil coverup. If you use the same principle of why you change your oil after 3 months then theoretically, you would change the oil every 15 months. But then that would be bad for oil sales too. But again, the trick is to change the filter. It is the microscopic metal particles that do the most harm in wear and tear of the engine.

Also, when I changed the oil pan gasket, I put some BIG magnets in their. I was ahead of my time. They stick small magnets in the transmission oil pans now. I figured the magnet would catch any small particles. Then the magnet is attached to a small chain, which I pull out during oil changes and clean. Works for me.

PS. All the above is backed up by the stuff I have read over the years. Except for the one year oil change which I do on my own but changing the filters regulary.

BEFORE you use Synthetic, take at least two tankfuls of gas and figure out your mpg with your regular oil. After you use synthetic, wait about 1000 miles for it to seep in the metal. Take two tankfuls of gas and figure out the mpg. Now figure out the money you save with the extra gas mileage. Also, you figure out what ONE synthetic oil change will cost vs TWO regular oil changes too. Cuz when 6 months is up you will have done two oil changes now, to figure out the price of the oil changes. So you can see you do not lose any major coin, going the syn oil route for one thing. Then the gas mileage you save with these high gas prices will definetly be in the syn oil favor by far. Once you have seen this money saved then like me you use it knowing that you will save money.

well on oil, you can use extended mileage 5w30 or 10w30, you can use synthetic oil in your car, it might work better. If you really want your car to last longer, try putting a whole bottle of lucas oil treatment in your next oil change and just follow the bottle instructions and it will last a long time.
