1 Samuel 12:1-13:15, and 15:1-35, Saul was told by Samuel, with orders from G-d, to destroy all traces of the Amalekites; including men, women, children, cattle, et al.
The Amalekites were heathen, aboriginal nomadic tribesman that had fought and killed the Jews. They were far from innocent.
During the time of Samuel the Prophet, King Saul and King David, the Philistines were cruel, war-like people who constantly were attacking and killing the Jews. They were far from being innocent, as well.

FDR slaughtered thousands of innocent Germans, Italians, and Japaneese... but hey I'm a conservative so I must only deal in absolutes.

Innocent, huh? Did God not say to them fight for Israel which I promise to you? Did the Jews have a country of their own before winning Israel, as God promised to them they would have? Why do you call it slaughter? The Philistines were some of the most murderous people of that time, and wiped out Jews and their children for years! Jews were wanderers without a land to call their own, and were constantly terrorized by the Philistines! Read your bible, if you have one!
