There is a wide variety of games, first think how much you like strategy, if you want a chance factor like dice or if you want something more skill-oriented.
Avoid the "new" games, most of them have great marketing and lousy gameplay.
Try the ancient favourites: backgammon, chess and go.
For a change try Scrabble, Othello or battleship. If any of you is a little strategy-impaired, try skill games like Jenga.
Collectible card/figure games usually require a good amount of money, time and brain space. Try before you buy.
There are some fun computer games for 2, like Worms, but make sure your spouse is willing to play on a PC.
www.boardgamegeek.com has a good amount of reviews you may find useful.
Happy gaming

My wife and I are in a similar situation. We like to play:
1. Niagara - a game about collecting gems and navigating the dangerous Niagara river. The game is light enough for non-gamers, but deep in strategy for those that like a little meat to games. My wife beats me all the time. *shrug*
2. Cribbage - a classic
3. Balloon Cup - a card based game about hot air balloon racing. Easy to learn. Good light game
There are other 2 player games that are very popular. Check out www.boardgamegeek.com and have a look at the geeklists.
Good luck!

My parents wiled away many an hour playing backgammon together. Me, I once fell in love over the game of pente. Didn't work out and now I devote most of my time to the game of go. The go board and pieces can also be used to play pente and go-moku. There's also a fun game I discovered called Abalone, which involves trying to push your opponent's marbles off the board. It's a fun and esthetically pleasing game.
I wish you many hours of fun.

If you know how to play Settlers of Catan, the card game is for 2 and is very entertaining. Especially if you get the expansion which gives you 5 new games.
My wife and I also play:
Quiddler
Parlay
Ticket to Ride (not as good, but still playable with 2)
San Juan
There's also a great thread on 2-player games here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/8498

Some great answers above, and I'll add some of my own (probably with some overlap). Here's some good 2 players to get you started:
Lost Cities - 2 player only
Balloon Cup - 2 player only
Tally Ho! - 2 player only
Cathedral - 2 player only
Settlers of Catan: Card Game - 2 player only
10 Days in (Africa, Europe, Asia, USA) - better with 3 or 4
Memoir '44 - 2 player only
Pick Picknik - better with 3 or 4
Kings in the Corner - good with 2, playable up to 4
Kazink!- good with 2, playable up to 4
Touche!- good with 2, playable up to 4
Sequence- good with 2, playable up to 4
Blokus - best with 4, look for the travel version for solid 2 player
Ingenious - good from 1 to 4 players
Happy gaming!

Hi there! We're always looking for games for 2 also. Here are some of our favorite choices (although most of them are not "board games" per se):
Quiddler (word game)
Parlay (word/poker game)
San Juan (Euro-type card game)
Blokus (the travel version is for two, or you can play the regular version, but you each play 2 colors)
Ticket to Ride (a FABULOUS board game, better for more than 2, but totally good even for 2 players)
Scrabble (word, obviously)
And then there are our old stand-by card games:
Gin
Rummy 500
Casino
Spades (for 2)
I hope that helps. Happy playing!

stratego is a great game for two. In fact it's made for only 2 people. (well I guess you could play 2 against 2). But it's very similar to battle ship but with added element of the ability to move the pieces. Instead of ships, stratego uses the army leadership roles. The goal is to be the last one standing. Plus the added benifit of bombs and spys. One of my favourites, plus there's an online version. http://www.metaforge.net/olg/webstratego/index.jsp

There are a number of games that can be played with two players even though more can play them. I understand thought the game play was designed best for more than one. On our website linked below you will see that we started a listing of two-player only games. These games are vintage games from years gone by. Several of them we have in stock.

i grew up with my dads old copy of mastermind. It's a game where one person makes a "secret code" with colored pegs in a 5 piece sequence and the second player gets ten guesses to "crack the code" It's a game of logic and deduction. Nerdy maybe, but my brother and had hours of fun playing it together.
