1 year consist of 2 semester, which means take 6 month for each semester.
but usually it would be 4-5 months effective, because of the holidays, summer, etc

in karachi university we have two semester in one year. 4 months study, 1 month for exams, approx 1 month break and again study starts. this is the cycle we follow here.

August or September to December. But universities also hold mini-mesters and class through the Christmas break and spring break.
