Casting or forging, depending on the part, then machining.
Pistons, cranks and cams are usually cast, and rods are usually forged. Depends on manufacturer.

ADDED: Most auto manufacturers use cast pistons. I see we need a little visual aid... SEE BELOW

Many of the old crankshafts on V8s were cast. If you had a forged steel crank, you paid extra.

Drop a small block V8 cam and it will snap, that would be cast. Forged material wouldn't break in half like that.

There is a risk pin pressed through the piston and through the connecting rod to connect them together. The piston has 2 compression rings and a oil ring with a ring on top and bottom of it and they are compressed and the piston is pushed into the cylinder. The connecting rod is bolted to the crank which is bolted to the block via main bearing caps.

Piston, Connecting rod, crank are all Usually done by forging, and cylinder is thru casting.
