Why are people so rude today? What ever happend to compasion?
Let me just say to all of you people, I work and a grocery store at night and the majority of people don't even say hello. It is like we "working class" are not worthy of your respect. Well, let me tell you about some of us. We are smart people with feelings too! We have families to raise and bills to pay and at least deserve you to say hello when we say it to you. Don't throw your money at us or expect us to kiss your butts when you can't even look us in the eye. I am very smart individual who had a 4.0 in college and am a office manager by day. Don't assume we all are ignorant people, snapping gum behind a register. Some of us didn't have the means to finish college. So why must you be SO RUDE?!

I'm not trying to say kiss our butts either. I'm just saying, please just respect us and treat us like people. You never know, you could be in our shoes someday.

Yes, I DID have a 4.0 in college and did NOT have the money to finish college. NO I am NOT being dramatic, it is the truth. Have you reviewed the price of a four year college tuition these days?

It seems that rudeness knows no bounds. You asked a question in this forum, and most of the folks who answered seem able identify with your views, but there are still a few who felt the need to lash out at you.
Just be assured, there are lots of people out there who are amazed at the height and depth of rudeness they encounter every day; they deal with it in the best way they know how, and come away a better person in the long run for their awareness. They know that kindness doesn't cost a thing, and they'll make the effort even though they'll win no prize for it. They practice the golden rule because it's the right thing to do.
What you have to remember is not to take the rude behavior of other people to heart. Their lack of manners and poor social skills isn't a reflection on YOU. People like you have a certain grace that is very admirable, and shows in the way you carry yourself. So, keep smiling, even if it's not reciprocated!
There are, as some other answerers mentioned, some folks who are just preoccupied, maybe they have had a fight with their spouse, or have been called down by their boss that day, they may have a baby with a fever at home. You can usually tell if someone is just not in a talkative mood, and that's easy to understand. But, as I said above, there are people who lack social graces and seem to go out of their way to be rude or mean, and those are the ones that are easy to spot. Give them *all* a smile, they deserve it, and go on about your business, knowing you are a gem in a world of too many unpolished souls.
Hey! Have a good week...
:D

Take it easy, and don't let them get to you. You're making assumptions...a lot of them...about what people are thinking. Are you sure you're not feeling insecure about your life? Do you feel like you have to prove something to these people? Did any of them say anything derogatory to you? Did they imply that you were stupid? Some people just aren't very talkative, especially late at night. Maybe some of them had a long, hard day. Maybe they were tired. I'm not saying they shouldn't have returned the greeting, I just think you may be reading too much into it.

The problem is that it starts with 'YOU'! If you cannot find in your self at work or wherever, to not look at someone and smile, why should someone else. A smile is worth a thousand words. It won't work with everyone, every time, but at least you aren't to blame for being rude.
I work in a convenience store and I say 'Hi, how are you?' to every customer that enters the store. Because I put them at ease to start with, they are more likely to be friendly. There are a few, who don't say much, but are never rude to me, because I have started with a FRIENDLY hello.
Try it, maybe it will help change the world, one hello and smile at a time.

from your link:"As Qur'an says that religion is not to be forced,to them is their religion and to me is my religion and so on." Qur'an also says that people of non-Islam religions are "the enemy". More from your link: "Sharia may be a very strict law..." and " Sharia is a Law,an Islamic system for everyone. It is the guidance in every perspective of life." So basically, your religion tells that people shouldn't have to be converted to Islam, but treated as enemy and that Sharia is a very strict law that sticks it's nasty fingers in "every perspective of life". Great. I think next time you want to make Islam look good, you'd do a better job at it by lying like many other Muslims. And I'll assume you probably do, later in the text... Are you kidding me? You think chopping someone's hand off for stealing is a good thing. What if we are dealing with a hungry poor individual who can't afford to buy food to survive? Stealing is not always a bad thing and guarding posts are additional job occupations too. We don't want rich people to just own everybody! "Judaism and Christianity got at least 18 provisions allowing stone to death." Hahaha, oh that's horrible, I don't recall Jew or Christians to actually stone to death anyone in past years not to mention as a general practice, yet you whine: "If they can kill people, why can't we?" Oh, evil.

I know what you mean. I work at Dunkin Donuts and you wouldn't believe some of the people that come into my work, it's amazing how rude some people can be. But you know what I really don't give a shiit if the employees are always supposed to be nice back no matter what. I don't put up with rudeness, so if you're going to cope an additude with me, expect one back.
Don't let the rude people get to you.. they aren't worth it!!

I agree with you; however, I think that we're constantly rushing around these days or are on edge about something (deadlines at work, dinner to make, kids that won't stop bickering) that we forget the niceties. It isn't an excuse; just a fact of life today. I do try but sometimes I have one of those days. Please don't take it personally. By the way, have a great Monday!

Sounds like you are the one with the problem. You obviously feel like less of a person because you work there, and thats your problem - no one elses. No one else can make you feel any certain way unless you allow it.... and theres a reason why you allow it.
If i said hello to every person i met or had contact with during the day I wouldnt have much time for anything else.
I really dont care about the life story of the person serving me at the grocery store - for the most part, when i am there I am tired, bored and eager to get home.... sometimes its appropriate to say hello, sometimes it doesnt matter.
if you say to them.. "Hi, how are you?".. 99% of the people who actually hear you and realise you are talking to them will answer.
get over it.

I can feel for you.
But face it, if you walked at one in the morning having to buy toilet paper would you want to talk to someone?
As for 'now-a-days' and comparing compassion there can be no such relation. This is because no studies have been done to show what the relationship is.

People are not rude today, can be everyday.
Maybe those people who don't say hello are not worthy enough to greet you ?
Rude, rude, rude. could this world get any worse?
