We are currently with Cingular and have a single old Nokia with a b/w display. We'd like to find an affordable plan that would let us call & text each other for free. I'd like to have a phone with a good quality camera with relatively high resolution. Other than that, I don't think we need much beyond the basics.
Any recommendations?

I know the whole plan won't be free. :)
I guess I should have said we'd like a plan that includes unlimited calling & texting between the two of us at no extra charge.

sprint is ok - it all really depends on how the service is where you live and plan on using your phone ntelos has unlimited text messages as do most of them now

when will your cingular contract expire? if so, you both can go to sprint, cingular, or t-mobile, get 2 new phones for free, and get a family plan, so the calls between you two will be free and they will have a family text plan for about $5-$10

go to Verizon and get on a family share with IN network. then you can text and call to each other all you want. it's not free, but it's $5 or $10 a month. nothings free, buddy. no camera phone has more than a 2 mp camera on it.
