Windows 98 has no real integrated security. The updates are not necessary, but recommended for better security and functionality.
You will have to add a 3rd party Firewall Software such as Augnitum Outpost, or Zonealarm for security.
Obtaining the Windows 98 updates will be a challenge since Microsoft has discontinued automatic updates via. Windows Update on all Windows 98 machines.

Absolutely you need to. It should be the first thing you do. Although Microsoft doesn't support windows 98 anymore, you still need all those security updates, anti virus, firewall etc.

Firstly, Microsoft no longer support windows 98. So i doubt you will get updates. However, apart from that, there are no major updates for Windows 98SE that are important. You can try windows update web site.

If it is Windows 98 SE that you reinstalled you can get all the updates together, it is unofficial but I have used it several times successfully.
