I've been playing drums for quite some time, yet I feel like I am wasting my time learning contemporary music. I have been told by folks "in the know" that I am too old (looking) to be taken seriously, & that its just how it is in the music industry. (aaaah, I'm gonna' be stuck in the 80's!)

Change your look if you need to.

I understand your question and your situation.
After watching some reunion tour with a funk band last night on T.V., it was really sad to see a group of middle aged men playing oldies. I could not help thinking, " why aren't these guys playing Jazz or something"
