How modern is modern? In going for "longest lived" you rather rule out parts of "modern" in that the longer lived ones existence outwith "modern times", whenever they are.

The Japanese empire has existed for nearly 2000 years, and it still exists today.

Jack - Can you class Japan as an empire? Simply calling your leader an emperor doesn't make an empire if the only land you occupy is your own.
