if your using windows then you can just use any picture as a icon
what you have to do is save the file using 'save as' option with an extension ' .dll ' . then right click on the icon and choose properties . there youll find the change icon button . click it . and youll see a window containing some icons .click browse and select the file which you saved and click ok and your icon is customised .

the safest way would be to get IconPackager from the wincustomize.com website.. it isn't free, but if you mess up by doing any of the above then your outta luck.. this way you can revert at any time and still be safe when customizing your icons.
