Profiling is just a tool used to either solve or deter a crime. Racial profiling is just a specific part of it. you have gender, age, height , weight, tattoos, scars, and a long list of ways to profile somebody. If a bunch of dunkin donuts were ransacked and the caltrops got away with the truck of goodies would the authorities use racial profiling as there main tool there, probably not. They use it in cases where the large amount of crimes are performed by a vast number of that race. If a plane goes down they probably go after a middle eastern man of decent because they have a history of hijacking planes since the late 60's. If a serial killer is loose they usually search for a white guy. There are a numerous number of scenarios, but people do what they have to do to stay safe. Did you ever hear the phrase play the worst case scenario just to be safe. It may not solve all crimes, but it is a place to start.

Racial Profiling is an ACLU term devised as only one part of a larger profiling model provided by the FBI, State Police and other prominent law enforcement agencies. There was a time "fitting the profile" was a basis for a stop. I will explain...

During a time when narcotics were being trafficked through your state (every state) there were statistics complied on the arrests. These stats had the kind of vehicle most used, the number of people in the vehicle, the times of the arrests, the places where the drugs were stashed and including the race of the arrested person. With these stats profiles were developed that told officers for example in Texas, that on IH10 during the hours of 10pm and 4 am, a Chevy impala occupied by 2 Hispanic males who are driving the exact speed limit may possibly be a drug courier. Stops made on this profile resulted in many more arrests than not. It became an accepted practice. In Florida where the cases really made headlines the profiles were black males. Stops were made and so were numerous arrests.

It was defense attorneys and the ACLU, NAACP etc did not concern themselves with the fact that more black males were transporting drugs than say 60 year old white men in Cadillac’s during the same times. They were not concerned that the facts supported the stops, they concentrated on the "black male" part and the whole thing got tagged as Racial Profiling.

This got laws passed that now say race cannot be a factor in the stop. Which is really no big deal for an intelligent officer. I can still use all of the factors of the original profile and articulate out the race card. All it did in the end was remove a few words from our reports. Ever wonder why when racial profiling hits the media by one of these people that the rest of the story is never told?

The last thing we want to do is describe the perp the police are looking for, let's leave them guessing, and stop discriminating against sexes too. "WANTED - Person. If seen, please call....." It's like people of a certain religous sect (last I knew one's faith was not determined by birth?) always screaming "racism" so much that even when a shooter in a Salt Lake City shopping mall went around yelling out his faith, and was given the hero treatment funeral back in his homeland, it was "not terror related." Because to suggest that, would be "racist". In the town where racial profiling became an issue (due to local police incompetence), that and several other knifing incidents, most of which remain unsolved, all involving non-caucasian-asian-or-hispanic suspects. In all of them, race was the issue based on remarks made by the assailants, although lately it has been labelled as "gang related" because there are special law enforcement grants for that.

If you mean the police asking for identification when they think a person is an illegal alien, that's not racial profiling. They are just investigating a possible criminal. This is appropriate! Illegal immigration is not a racist issue. It is about the law!

If you mean pulling over a black person because he's black, that is wrong.

If you mean checking young Muslim males on airplanes, YOU BET! That's called security.

Racial profiling is an improper term...the correct term is CRIMINAL PROFILING....

White Bikers...More likely to be involved with Crystal Meth
Strong arm crimes
African Americans ...Heroin gang related violence
Middle Easterners....Terrorist attacks

Race is a factor...but not the only consideration...it doesn't say that all of these persons of this race do this..it just says people who do this are more likely to be...

It is just a crime prevention tool...

It is a tool, and unfortunately it is used too often for the wrong reasons.

It is a double-edged sword--it cuts both ways. The Israelis use it to deter and find would-be suicide bombers and terrorists (the good thing about it), and the US police forces use it to deter crime (the bad thing about it is the way this society is a racist society--even though there is lip service to the contrary).

If used, is must be used judiciously, and for the right reasons without simply using race as a litmus test for whether someone should be stopped and searched. Until the education in this country (and by that I mean what children are taught by parents, peers, Hollywood, and advertisers) is truly non-prejudicial there must be controls on the use of racial profiling.

It has worked in every other Nation , I get profiled all the time , everywhere I go I get pulled over and asked to verify ownership of my car , I guess white guys ,with long hair ,and tattoo's ,wearing jeans ,and tee shirts everyday are not supposed to drive nice new cars , I guess we should be riding either a Harley Davidson , or driving old Ford pick-ups or an old Ford Pinto without hub caps.. It does not bother me , I have nothing to hide . I get pulled over at least 4 or 5 times per week . I get watched in stores , they always watch me especially when I am in the gun section , then I have fun , one day I went in to the Hardware store , loaded a cart with Shotgun shells , trash bags ,and hack saw blades ,then when to the gun counter , the clerk saw my cart ,and asked if I needed something , I told him I needed a couple of guns then pulled out a piece of paper like it was a long list ...... man ! you should have seen the look on the clerks face ..ha ha ha ...I bet he first thought IT , then he probably done IT ...ha ha ha ha ....

If the shoe fits, wear it.

19 Arabs destroyed the WTC, no Blacks, Asians or whites. They don't mind profiling Whites. Serial killers are by far whites. That is the first thing they think about when we are faced with one, look for a middle aged white.

Ineffective and incorrect. Racial profiling will only breed further disputes and many terrorist organizations have pawns that are not middle eastern. The true way of cracking down on terrorism is good U.S. intelligence not racial profiling.
