I am thinking about moving from California to Austin, TX in June. I will be purchasing a home there. I have been looking at some great brand new homes build by KB Home in the McKinney Falls/Heights area that is really reasonable. Is this a good area to live (Clean, Safe, Commute to Downtown, Things to do nearby, etc)?

OK...first let me see. Austin is wonderful. I love it and I love the part of town I live in (North), although there are many other great parts of Austin, THAT IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

I did a little research once I realized where it was and here is what I found out.

From Austin ADP - this website shows the police reports in the area - in a six day time frame starting on 3/15 there were over 100 police reports where in my zipcode there were 18 (mainly traffic stops and so forth)

I also looked up the sex offenders in that zipcode using the website below and there were dozens. I have two in my zipcode. SCARY.

Last - I have heard awful things about KB homes and I went to look for an article for you and found a WHOLE WEBSITE.

Ok...so I hope you have now decided not to move to that part of town, but I hope that doesn't mean you give up on Austin..it is a wonderful place, just do some more research.

Mckinney Falls is in southeast Austin, very close to McKinney Falls State Park. It's also close to a major highway and our international airport. I'm not sure if they are all that way, but I think the runways run north and south and you will be to the west of the airport. The zip code might have a bad crime rate, but the way that area is situated, you're actually kind of isolated from the "bad" parts. Nothing in Austin is far from downtown. To get to the next town south of here, from downtown, it's a 15 minute drive down the highway (not during rush hour!). I might do more research on KB homes, because I've heard stories, but it's all hearsay coming from me. There are homes being built on Slaughter Ln., Manchaca Road, South IH-35 (I think they're Centex), everywhere, so just keep looking. There is tons of growth in north Austin as well, but South Austin really is the place to be. Anywho, I think you'd enjoy it. Everyone else does!

KB homes suck. I lived in Austin for 2 years and never heard of McKinney Falls, so it must not be too close to town.

Most (but not all) of the southeast part of Austin is a less than desirable area. Start looking for something on the west side of I-35.

I have lived in TX. for my whole life. I love it. It is quiet, and a great place to have a family. Mesquite is where I live and it is the best place to move. There is no shootings or murders or anything like that.

You Californians. Austin has plenty of Californians, they are overrunning the place, seriously....
