Another Aussie would be punter Sav Rocca has gone over the States and is on the Eagles roster (I think it's the birds?), but will not have to face the draft? Why? Please let me know.

From what I understand, a team may acquire players outside of the draft by just making a phone call (hapens frequently with older players being called back out of retirement).

Logically then, why would a player subject themselves to the draft and risk going to a lousy team. The simple answer is, more money. The position you are drafted at carries a price tag. Though the price is not written in stone, it is based on deals signed by the players drafted ahead of you. The #1 pick almost always sets the tone for signings.

Skipping the draft means your agents must negotiate with what pot of money is left, which may not be much. Most undrafted players end up cut or on the practice squad. A few make the big time (but not many).

It's very simple. Just like in baseball and every other sport, if you are not drafted out of college there is an invitation from the team to come and try out. If you are good enough then you can make the 52 man roster.

If you think that NFL scouts are limited to just the US to find their next best thing, the you would be far off.

the draft pretty much only covers the American college scene - foreign players are considered free agents

after the draft they also have tryouts, for those that may have not attended college.
