I'm a freshman at college and undecided about my major (big surprise right?). Just wondering how you decided upon a major, and how closely is your job now related to the major you chose?

I tell my students to take a wide range of courses and to follow up with conversations with faculty and other students about anything that seems intriguing.

If you have a goal, even if it is a general goal such as "do well in my studies" it will keep you moving and by moving, you'll find the right spot. In the short term you get to test out lots of different options. In the long term you end up with some great stories.

For example, how about this weird mix of undergrad courses: "Veterinary Anatomy" "Journalism Law" "Ballroom Dance" "World Food Crops" and "Calligraphy." This is what happens when you start out thinking you'll go to vet school and you discover other interests on the way. The mix, which is even more diverse than that, led to working as a designer, which led to graduate school in graphic design, which led to being a design professor. Is that a normal path? Who knows what normal is--all I know is it's been interesting every step of the way.

Enjoy learning and growing and expanding your understanding of the world. It'll all sort itself out eventually and in the meantime you become a more interesting person.

I found my major by accident in high school. I was put into an Environmental Science class as an alternative, the classes I wanted were full. But I ended up loving it, and in my junior and senior year I took a dozen Env. Sci. classes and got really involved in it. Now I'm a freshman in college, studying Env. Sci. Just try taking a variety of classes, and hopefully you will find something that you are very interested in.

I think you just need to take classes in different areas and see which is most appealing to you.
Im a freshman in college too, I've already changed my major. I was a psychology major, and now Im a political science pre-law major. Probably going to double with English.
For me, science and math aren't my stronger subjects and I hate them. I love history, english, political science, so its a fit for me. I don't see myself changing my major.
Consider what subjects you are good at and what you are not so good at. (Ex. if you aren't good in math, might not want to be an engineering major)

Go have fun and not worry about a major. The purpose of college is to do networking not studying. Why do you think the rich people send their kids to elite school? You can study all you want and it doesn't matter which school you're in or which major you're in.
