Kind of awkward asking on here lol
Okay well I'll be 14 beginning of April, and I still haven't had my period. I'm about 5 feet and 80 pounds, so I'm underweight, can I not get it until I gain more weight? Don't get me wrong I'm not looking forward to it I just want to be prepared. When it does happen will it just full on happen or will it start with like tiny drops of blood the first day so that I know it's starting or what?
The gross discharge stuff I've got.. so how soon do you think I'll get it?
Man this is awkward. Serious answers only please :]
Oh and how do you delete a question >.>

I'm not anorexic or bulimic and not really worried about my weight.. I'm underweight but I don't look like I'm dying or anything.

Hi There,
Don't feel awkward, we all get it eventually. You are "petite" and mostly a girl/woman needs to have a certain amount of body fat before she will get her period, thats why alot of girls that have anorexia don't get it...they don't have enough body fat. The body fat acts in a certain way with how much estrogen your body produced and there for your period.
Most girls will get their first period somewhere between
9-16 years. With I believe most around 12-14 so I'd say you are right on track. They say if you haven't by 16 then see your doctor and he/she can put you on estrogen to prompt it. But from what your saying I don't think its that far away. From my experience and girls I've known for a few months you may get an "almost" period were you get kind of a yucky brownish clumpy like discharge (sounds awful doesn't it) for a couple of days, and then nothing for a few weeks and then again, for a while and then one month it might last a little longer and be more bloody maybe you will have sore boobs, crampy etc.
Some women it takes a year of "spotty" periods before a "real" full out one. As for how will you know every woman is different, I, personally, have always known because it starts "slow and spotty" for oh 1/2 a day, so I prepare. Then some women gush like a waterfall right away, but I think most women have a pretty good idea and know to wear jeans those days and no white skirts *wink* . Sounds to me like
your pretty close honey(within the next couple months I'd say), can you talk to your mom or a nice teacher, school nurse or aunt or someone--if you don't have these people in your life you might be pleasantly surprise what a dad knows! or even make a doctor appointment he/she could help). Maybe they could help you to decide about protection etc. ----ie. tampons are really difficult to work with the first few times, and when you do use them you'll probably only need the smallest ones.
But like I said, it feels soooo embarrassing to talk about it but all of us get it eventually!!!!
AND most of the time its not half as bad as girls make it out to be. especially if YOU don't make it out to be a BIG deal.
like your not sick, you can still play sports and swim, guys don't even have to know etc etc.
Good Luck!!!Sweetie and don't worry it will all work out fine.
***I just read your additions----there is kind of a suggestion out there that you can sort of go by when your mom had hers first too. So yup, I'd say right on track!!!
*** Also, I don't think your anorexic just small my god your 5'
now if you were 5'7" and 80 lbs I'd worry but if you eat well and exercise within reason, no problem. And when it comes to periods as I said before, and what most girls don't recognize is its BODY FAT% that is the determining factor, not how "skinny" you are. For example Body builders, and marathon runners for two, can train so hard they have little to no body fat, muscles galore and they eat tons (aren't anorexic) BUT don't get there periods!!! Strangely enough, it works on the other side too extremely heavy women also often don't get it---my self for example I'm about 5lbs one way or the other...I gain 5 lbs I don't get it....I loose 5lbs and I do.
The woman's body is a Wonderful machine, BUT my goodness can it be confusing!!!!!!

ALL girls are different, I got mine at 12, my best friend got hers at 16 for example. I think you sound pretty clued up on the subject and just need reasurance. Weight can be a factor in why its taking longer then what is considered the 'norm', but I wouldnt worry too much about it. You mentioned that you are getting discharge, so it will probably start fairly soon. Other symptoms are sore breasts, bloating of the belly and cramps. A period always starts slowly, so you should be able to tell when to start wearing a pad or tampon. The discharge will change to a slight brownish tinge when you wipe and then you will notice some small spotting of blood, after that the flow will start. It finishes pretty much the same way, less blood and then slightly brown discharge. Just keep a chart of when these things are happening so that you can work out roughly when the next period will be likely to fall. Also for the first year or two the period is all over the place, never on time and lasting for different lengths so dont worry too much about it.

Being underweight can prevent your period from coming, but if you are on the small side and only 5 foot, it doesn't seem so bad to me. But you should check with a doctor about that since I am only guessing.
The first time I got mine, it was just a rusty stain in my underwear. I had a lot of bad stomach cramping (even though I never cramp during my periods) but I didn't feel anything actually pass out. Trust me, you will recognize that brown stain in your panties when you see it. Only after a few more days you will see actual blood. It's something you get used to really quickly and it's easy to deal with.
I think you will get it pretty soon. You're just a late bloomer! Nothing wrong with that at all, some people don't get it until they're 16.

If you are underweight, that actually can effect your period. If your body doesn't perceive itself as "healthy and able to reproduce", then it may be slowed, delayed, or altered. That's not real uncommon. But, it will happen eventually, regardless of your weight.
As to how it starts - that varies with everyone. It will happen on one particular day in a matter of minutes or hours. The type of flow (heavy, slow, light, etc) is different for every person, and that first time doesn't necessarily reflect how it will be for you on a regular basis.
You may have more cramping on the first time - you may have none. It takes several cycles before the female body adjusts to how it will do things each time. Some girls take up to a year or more for their cycles to regulate.
You commented about "gross discharge". You should not be having any discharge at all. Discharge is not normal for menstruating adults, or premenstrual adolescents. Yellow, white, or even clear discharge is a symptom of possible infection or disease. If it persists, have it checked by your doctor.

Your weight could be affecting why you haven't had a period. I'm not saying you have a problem, but I had a bulemic aunt who was severely underweight and didn't have a period for years. If you do have a problem, there is help available. If you're just underweight, you may still want to see a doctor about this. I was about your age when I had my first, and it was later than most of my friends. Don't be too worried about that yet. (And enjoy what time you have left without having to deal with it every month!)
What will it be like? I can only tell you what mine was like. It wasn't much, and it was almost like it was dried blood... a dark reddish-brown, and it was pretty intermittent. It took awhile to become regular, and more blood-like.

Being underweight can postpone your having your first period. But you may also have it while being underweight, you just may have them less frequently (like every other month). If you are really concerned talk to your doctor the next time you go in or go talk to the school nurse, they can both help you out without making you feel even more awkward.
Also having it the first time will probably be light. Not every person is the same, but that is how it usually it in the beginning.

Okay, first of all, why are you so underweight? If you are anorexic, then your period could very easily be delayed by poor nutrition/health. Next ?...how old were your female relatives when they started? Your age isn't too unusual, especially if you went through late puberty. The discharge stuff, I can't answer.
My period started at 12 with a terrible stomach ache, felt like I had to go #2! Please ask your doctor if you're worried!

Yeah you are underweight, but don't worry it will happen. It won't be big when it does, but it won't be tiny ether. When you see blood on your underwear, you know you have started. Then you put on a pad, and count about 28-30 days later so you know when you'll start your next one. Don't worry when you skip a month or two. That's normal for first timers. IT will work out. I know girls that are underweight, and they still do it, so don't worry. Gaining weight would help though.

You are underweight and yes that could be why you haven't gotten your period. You may also just be a one of those that gets their period later. How it starts varies from person to person. For some they see some blood when they wipe after urinating and for other they have a big stain in their underwear with a wet feeling.

You cant ever know for sure. Its different for every person. Cant answer the "flow question part" becaumse im not a chick but no you dont have to gain weight to have a period. Puberty is a process that comes over time. You will get your period soon most likly.
