It depends on the man. The late Ed Bradley from "60 Minutes" started wearing an earring a loooong time ago, and he was cool. Just as long as the man only wears one earring. Luckily for the general public, the man's earring fad seems to be fading away, and soon only the cool guys will wear them again.
