My professor I feel, along with many of my fellow student, that our teacher has a unfair and ridiculous way of grading. Her aim in grading is really against the student by weighing a project, worth 140 point in her book, equal to a homework check, which she marks as 5 point. She never explained fully about her absurd grading nor does it go with what she had written down in the course syllabus and her form of assigning "points" mislead me. So I'm wondering how should I press this issue towards a Dean? Should I start by having students, which I'm sure their willing to do, sign a petition? Please help. Thanks.

If a petition is the right way to go; what sort of information should I put on the petition? As I've never done something like this.

petition would help a lot....usually there are few lines on top...stating the reasons and bunch of lines/boxes for signature. it doesn't have to be a certain format. you can provide space for the students to put their reasons to sign the petition, which will be a good idea in this case. take the petition to the dean but after chatting with him for the first time....get an idea of his intentions and if it doesn't look good then spread that petition to everywhere u can......mail copies to other official, hand 'em out to people, send 'em to other teachers....basically make a big deal about it.....best time to do this is after dropping the class......or changing the status from a grade to just pass/false which doesn't affect your GPA.

First speak to your professor, that is the something the head of the department will as you. After speaking with her and you still are not satisfied, go to the department head and save the dean as a last resort. My sister had a professor who came her a D on a final just because he said he couldn't read her handwriting... he was over 70 years old. The "not being able to read her writing" was his only explanation. A petition is a good idea.

I went to the head of the dept. once because my teacher let other students have more time on an exam ( I had another test to take) It was a cultural matter and it caused everyone grief. In her country, the former students of a teacher were taken care of as repayment of loyalty. It caused everyone involved great difficulty. Perhaps it could be done nicely and anonymously without putting anyone in a situation they could not negotiate. But in most places, the teacher grade can only be changed by the teacher.

i filed a complaint against my professor once, and i went to the head of the department first. it was my genetics professor i was complaining about, so i looked on the department of natural sciences website for my college and found a place where you can report teachers. this place had me file a report with the head of the natural sciences department - so it was all online. hope this helps!

I wouldn't think you would go straight to the dean.
Maybe go to the head of the department first and talk with them.
