Thanks Croa for a timely question to refocus the participants on what WS actually is. This is a academic discipline, which is hard to believe when you read some of the questions that are being posted in this section. It has nothing to do with hating men. I personally believe that men and women should both be treated in a fair and equitable way in all areas.
This is the description of the Women's Studies Program from St. Francis Xavier University. I find this definition to be quite appropos for what I believe the discipline encompasses. Women's experiences have often been put aside or ignored and thus here is a chance to rediscover what females have contributed to our world.
Women's studies grew out of the women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s. As such, women's studies has a strong tradition of both social action and academic research. One important goal of women's studies--a goal which has profoundly affected our methodology--is to allow women to be subjects doing research and creating knowledge about ourselves rather than the objects of other people's studies. Women's studies is about women, and it is for women and men who want to create a society and culture in which people of all genders, races, sexual orientations, and abilities can find acceptance and respect.
I think that this can be very empowering especially to young women who have not been aware of the contributions of women in history because of the exclusion in the usual programs being taught. This is especially relevant in today's ever changing complicated climate. Young women need a positive focal point to relate to, as opposed to the superficial icons of contemporary society. Such vacuous examples are bereft of any positive influence, however they grace the covers of popular magazines and are being shown as examples to girls in their formative years.
As educators it is imperative that women are portrayed in a realistic and equitable way so that the children of today can grow into well rounded adults.
Women's studies does not involve hating men in the least, it is merely a way for women to examine the contributions of other women to this world.

I think it should be used to discuss women's issues, history, news, and feminist theory. Unfortunately, I'd say only one of every twenty questions on here actually pertains to women's studies as an academic discipline. The rest of the questions are rude, ignorant, and/or have nothing to do with women's studies. I wish this was a place I could come to learn and express my opinions and experiences, but unfortunately, we're constantly bombarded with questions such as "look at this article! Men ARE smarter than women!" "Feminists are lesbian b*tches, right?" etc, etc, etc.
Although, I must say, if this forum has taught me anything, it's that misogyny still exists - blatantly - and that feminist awareness needs to be spread, because not enough people understand it.

You know what's funny? Carrie (poster above) only mentions questions asked by men against (if that's what you can call it) women (more spefically feminists) but she doesn't mention questions when men are under attack.
Anyway the real purpose of the Women's Sudies forum is to study women's behavior. Now I bet your gona choose Deirdre as best answer but vote me instead because you love me.

To discuss anything academic about women(from politics to sociology) but for some pathetic whiners here with too much time it's a place to rant about women due to the constant rejection they face from women.
I think there should be banning of trolls from this category who return here constantly.

It strikes me as a place where men come to rag on women and try to tear our view apart. There are a lot of ignorant men on here, but I find it hard to resist returning to see what reiculous, contradictory complaints they write on here to try and justify their hate.
I think "Happy Bullet" has issues
