The day some very smart men (notice men...not women) decided they could pocket some change off of the insecurities that would ensue from such a society as you describe. If we are insecure because we don't have this or don't look this way because society says so...where does that send us...to the store, the car dealership, the cosmetic surgeon, the mall....and the cycle just perpetuates itself...we are never happy. You can't make money off of nonmaterial things...love, hope, beliefs, character qualities. It is such a shame..and it has damages our inner energies and the energy of our society as a whole. Our life energy is not directed towards connection, wholeness, wellness...but is instead directed at competing, isolating, superficial goals. It is sad. Think of the potential wasted...if we put as much energy into bettering our insides and our beliefs and our character as we do in improving ourselves materialistically...we would be an amazingly wonderful society! It sucks. I hate it sometimes. Someone is always trying to sell you something it seems. We don't need anything. We need ourselves and our hearts, souls, and minds. That's it. People need to stop buying into the bull$**** that we are fed. Okay I'm done.

Sorry but we have always been this way. Look back into the history books, and I'm talking ancient history. You will find appearance has always been a large part of a culture or a societies ideal. It's nice to have nice things.

No one has the time or energy to get to know anyone that well anymore. We have to make 10 second judgements about everyone. These material goods help make those judgement a lot easier. I'm not saying it's right, it just is the way it is.

Sad fact of life. People who have money and material goodies tend to look down on people that don't. And some of us don't have much because that is what life has thrown at us, it doesn't make us lesser beings though.

Being secular does not at once relate to being materialistic. i'm an Atheist, yet i'm not probably stricken approximately having a number of 'stuff'. ...and as for impermanence... our lives are impermanent, I carry them in extreme esteem.

This isn't necessarily right, but society does judge us and sometimes in a very unfair way.
