It is a personal choice, which should be kept to self and discussed only if it is with another person on the same diet. Talking about the diet you are on would be a rude and inappropriate topic to discuss over a meal, especially if you are a guest or if someone has issues with eating.

If you're on a diet you shouldn't be at the dinner table long enough to discuss anything.

Talking about a diet at dinner is like telling the other person that they are fat or inconsiderate. Just order your food and eat what you can and leave it at that. After all you should be talking with your mouth full anyway.
