It was assumed they would continue in the labor force..but as it turns out..a majority of them returned to the kitchen....because the men returning home would need jobs....and even they had a hard time finding work. But it was turning point for women in the work force.

Well during WW II women worked in the industries, farms, and even helped out with the military. However, now that the men are coming home, they are to return to their natural roles, as being a Mother. In other words being as trophy wife or stay at home Mom, that was their role and title during the 50s. This is all what they did.
However, the assumption really was, was that the women would go back to their old roles. Since the men were off fighting, the women had to take their place and now that men were coming home, they were given their jobs back. Therefore leaving the women jobless, and allowing the women to become a Mother.

the government, businesses made of men mostly believed that women would give up their factory jobs after their husbands came home from the war. some did, some didn't.
