There is one good thing in your query as I understand. You know "You are self-destructive". Now "Why?" is the question intriguing you?. Because you identify yourself on your body. You or yourself is not only your body, it also includes, mind. This mind is the sumtotal of all past causes and effects, present consequences, Nature, circumstances etc. You are not able to do any "Anatomy or surgical cure" to your mind. So you think your mind is totally a part of body and by doing something to your body is something against your "Mind". This is also being done with your mind and cure requires only at mind. It depends on what kind of help you require at present to come back to a "simple mind" state. First you may require some help of Psychiatrist, some medicine. Then a proper understanding of your mind. Overcoming its own "Habit Nature". Vipassana/Insight meditation is good.

Low self-esteem is a big deal and people will do anything to numb the pain. The good news is that its something you can work on with the right help through therapy/books/the habit of positive thinking/persistance you can get alot better.
Sometimes people are just addictive. There are also disorders such as bipolar and borderline personality that can cause such behaviours which maybe worth looking into.

That is so hard a question to answer and truthfully only you really know why. Depression is the number one reason for people to want to destroy themselves. I suppose you feel as if you do not measure up in some way...perhaps you were not told you were good enough as a child? Try to find something in life you love, and then identify with it.

based on my experience, i have change myself from being self-destructive to having self esteem and self respect.we must love ourselves first before anybody.thats why we feel we dont love ourself.its so fortunate for ourselves if we practice loving oneself since understand life.its causes may come from previous bad experience.instead of treating it as a lesson.we treat it vice versa.so the effect is self destructive.
