for the basic details of the type of universities that offer the kind of courses you think you want to study, then use the Times' good university guide to get a rough idea of how good idea they are (they may be quite subjective, though, so you may want to compare the Times' rankings with that of the Guardian's)

For art schools, I would definitely suggest you have a look at the University of Arts London website:
http://www.arts.ac.uk/
which is made up of very different arts-based colleges, but has an excellent reputation in the industry (particularly Central Saint Martins/London College of fashion) -but again, it depends on what you want to study!

Huddersfield University is having a £22million create arts department built which opens Sept 2008.....will have a very impressive art school

Pick your subjects and look for who does well in them. My university was deemed a pretty poor one. But it's Psychology department (My subject) was one of the best in the country. You need to do your homework.
