Only people that work in the area of law need respond. I have been estranged from my husband for over 20 years now. We have lost track of each other, I don't even know if he is still alive.

I have been told several times that I have to post a legal message in at least two newspapers in the last known area he lived in for a certain length of time. That is EXPENSIVE! I have checked it out.
Also, if I get lucky and find him, I have to pay someone to serve papers on him, which is VERY EXPENSIVE. I don't even know if he already got a divorce, how do I find that out? I live in a different state now.
Anyone have any ideas for me?

okay.
The reason I waited so long is I have been BROKE all of these years and every single divore lawyer I spoke to STARTED at $2,000.00 retainer fees to be paid UP FRONT!
The reason I want one now is because he will be entitled to part of my retirement if I don't get a divorce pretty darned soon.
I cant even get my teeth fixed let alone pay a lawyer $2,000.00 cash up front!

They have legal papers for every state that they help you fill in. They will answer your questions as well and tell you step by step what you need to do.
I used them and it was really easy and cheap.

He hasn't already gotten a divorce because you haven't been notified. He has to have you notified if you're going to have a divorce.

You cannot have a "cheap" divorce. You have to get a lawyer, the paperwork, and court.

My advice would be firstly to locate him. Don't spend all of this money looking for someone you don't even know is alive or not. Find out if he's alive. If he is, contact him and let him know you want a divorce. Then arrange a meeting with him where you can talk finances, possesions, etc.

The law depends on the state you live
In Michigan you can buy a divorce book and do your own divorce very inexpensive I believe Minnesota is the same but check online and call your local book store to see if your state has one it gives you all the paperwork to file and how to fill it out I have done my own and I have helped several others from getting one

Why has it take 20 years? You need legal advice not advice from an online message board. I suggest you consult divorce lawyers in your area and find ones who give free first time consultations. Don't be surpirsed if they ask "Why have you waited so long?"
