I've found some frames at LensCrafters that I really like. Because I have a very strong prescription, they are recommending their thinnest, lightest, newest lense type (of course, it's the most expensive). This lense is called the "Superview 1.67 SGP" -- it's $275 and then the Scotchgard Protector is another $115. Is this all worth it? I'll admit, the salesperson did a very effective demo of the Scotchgard in the store, but I would appreciate some info from someone who understands this industry and knows what is hype and what isn't with these lenses. thanks!

I'm not an industry expert but my impression from having bought lenses at Lenscrafters and at regular optometrists is that Lenscrafters always ends up costing you at least $100 more than the upper end of what you'd consider reasonable. In other words, I'm pretty sure you can get equivalent quality for less at a regular optomestrist, or at a discount optometrist like Costco.
To find out whether that's true, call Lenscrafters again and ask them what the exact composition and features of the lenses are -- "Superview 1.67 SGP" means nothing to me and might mean nothing to the next optometrist. But once you know what materials they are using, you can call up another optometrist and see what they charge for the same or comparable quality.
When you buy at Lenscrafters, you are paying extra to support their quick service and their advertising budget.

Be very careful about purchasing any eyewear through LensCrafters.
I work with a young woman who went to work for them over the holiday season for some extra income and left their employ after seeing how they drive the prices of their selections up to make extra money.
I priced some eyeglasses through them and I have a very strong prescription also, I have worn eyeglasses since the age of two, and have had multiple surgeries to improve my vision and correct a "lazy eye." Their prices were over $250.00 higher than my own eye doctors and the eye departments at Sears and Walmart.
If you are talking about a clear coat that covers your lenses to protect them from scratches, I have always had that on my eyeglasses without an additional charge. (Scotchguard is a fabric protector, so if the salesperson said Scotchguard they were really clueless as to what they were talking about.)
You should get the name and style number of the frames that you like, many eye doctors and eyeglass centers may be able to order them for you.
Good luck and enjoy your new eyewear.

Just get the standard polycarbonate lenses with no protection. You will most likely just get them replaced before any serious damage occurs to them.
If you are a klutz, then go for the super expensive ones. But I don't think it's worth it.

I went there to try contacts and it was a complete ripoff! I'd definitely suggest you check into other places before deciding. They tried to push me into a 600 dollar package and i couldnt even see a difference with the lenses on since it was minor.

You do want a polycarbonate lens for a strong prescription. Forget about the "Guard"...the lens you buy will be strong enough to prevent scratches unless you totally trash the glasses.
Go to another eye place with your RX in hand and ask them to quote you a price.

whats your grade (eye)? i have 6.00 both eyes..so this makes my glasses much more expensive, like you i need a very thin one. I spent like around $300+ but i dont think you'll need the scotch guard, i think you'll need the anti reflection (for $300+, i have that, and presciption glasses already). Of course, the sales person will tell you all the good talk. You can save more on having your glasses on local optical clinics.
