Well, it all depends. How old are you? Has the owner been burned a lot by shoplifters? That's why shoplifting is so risky. There's not just one answer. If you are under 16, the owner may call the police and they would call your parents to come get you. If you are 16-18, you are in more trouble. If you are over 18, hold on! You're in a mess!
The fact is shoplifting is a crime and the owner can really prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. The owner may decide to make an example of you. And if the owner has been burned a lot by shoplifters, he may elect to prosecute you, even if you shoplift something of fairly low value.

It depends on the situation. You're probably shoplifting for a reason. If you really need the item (diapers, food, etc) I would cover it and I would not get the cops involved.
