Put simply, a novella is a very short novel (or a very long short story if you want to be sarcastic). There isn't really a criteria for length, per se, but generally novellas lack subplots and tend not to span great lengths of time. They usually only focus on either a single character or a short length of time. If you were to ascribe an actual page count, most novellas average out at just a little over 100 pages (in a typical size of paperback). They're also called Novelettes.

Basically, it is a short novel or long short story. There's also a shorter version which is called a novelette, but still longer than a short story. Normal novel is 50,000 - 110,000 words. A novella is like 8000-20,000 words. A novelette is like 5,000 -8,000 and a short story is usually under 5,000 words. Hope this helps. I also do some writing.

Its a short novel. There is no standard definition of the number of words/pages it can have. Its longer than a "novelette" ;)

The boundaries distinguishing a novel, novella and a novelette are very fuzzy.
