It is the same as shooting anyone else. Even police are investigated for shooting the bad guys.

It really depends on the circumstances. If the person (..not necessarily a criminal..) is putting your life or the life of others in danger then go ahead and blow him/her away. Even if you just *think* the person is threatening lives I'd say it's okay to shoot. In this circumstance though you're running the risk of being charged, maybe with involuntary manslaughter.

obviously it depends what type.
If you THINK that person is trying to kill you, then you kill him without thinking twice, regardless what weapon he is holding, if there is ANY chance he can carry out his wish, and so shoot.

However, in all other cases, restraining a person is best, but if that is not possible, then shoot where it will not kill a person or cause long-lasting injury, like in the foot, etc.

Lastly, if you yourself are a criminal, i wouldn't suggest to shoot yourself.

Hence, shooting should only be used to kill, where needed, or to slow a person down/restrain him when other less damage-inflicting methods are not available.

Not if you are protecting yourself or loved ones from the threat of death.

Not if you're shooting him to protect you and yours. Not if you don't have any other choice.
