I would not say that XML is necessarily missing any data types - it is a flat text information exchange format; highly flexible, nothing more. XSLT is useful for migrating XML data from its native format to one more usable by and end-point application. For example, some sophisticated XSLTs can create a populated PDF template from an XML file.

everything in xml is a string to xsl. if you need to do math on it. You need to verify it's numeric then convert then do the math.
