JavaScript is an in-browser programming language that allows websites to be interactive and have the page respond to user activity without reloading. For example, the Check Spelling button here on Yahoo! Answers requires JavaScript. Many sites like YouTube also require JavaScript to be able to display the videos most effectively for your specific computer.

JavaScript has absolutely nothing to do with Java, despite the confusing similarities in name. Don't bother downloading Java or anything from Sun unless you specifically need Java.

To enable in Internet Explorer:

Go to Tools > Internet Options
Go to the Security tab
Click the "Custom Levels..." button near the bottom
Scroll down almost to the bottom of the list, where it says "Scripting". Underneath that it says "Active Scripting" and has choices for Enable, Disable, and Prompt. Choose "Enable"
and click OK, then click OK.
