My tub needs to be hidden! The wall lining also but $ is an issue. I don't want a crappy job either.... does that mean I want my cake and eat it too?

Ah, Kitten, we all want our cake and eat it too so don't let that stop you. I am a contractor and do everything from scratch but I have seen several Bath Fitter jobs. As a rule they are about 1/2 the price of tearing out and replacing the works. The product they have is actually pretty good considering it's a retrofit. It is a plastic/acrylic type of material that I'm sure will give many years of dependable service. It doesn't look or feel just like a newly remodeled bath but it does carry the big benefit of usually being completed in only one day. Saves a lot of stress and downtime. The only real complaint I have on a job they did was cutting the tub to fit the base trim instead of cutting the trim to butt the tub. They filled in the gaps created with caulk and it really looked unprofessional. I had to repair the area to keep it from leaking when water hit the floor and to make it look a lot better. But that was the only one of theirs that I saw wasn't up to par. I'd suggest asking for several references and deciding it from there.

Good Luck!

The estimates I have seen on other DIY websites have been really high. So high, that it would be cheaper to install a new tub. Most were over $1000. I did see one of the installations on television and it looked impressive though. One problem I can see is that Bath Fitters is a franchise. This could mean that the person installing your job may be better or worse at it than another franchise holder.
