How rare would a yellow female with a black wash (terminology?) be? Please only answer if you know what you're talking about. Thanks!

As far as her color goes, she is almost a goldenrod yellow, kinda brilliant, kinda subdued at the same time. She's very pretty.

I don't want to breed her, I don't have the resources. I'm just wondering about her coloration. Thanks!

Nope, no red at all... found her at Wal-Mart to be exact lol! I hope she's still there when I get back! I didn't have anywhere to put her and I'm out of town for a couple of days! :(

Yellow bettas are classified as non reds and assuming she doesn't have any red on her at all she would be a very nice find indeed in a pet shop strain. The black wash or lacing over the scales isn't very rare among yellows, some have it some don't. hey are resonable common in betta breeding circles, but quite rare in pet shops again assuming she has no red on her at all.

I have a female that sounds a lot like yours. She's yellow with black. no red or blue or any other color for that matter. She also has a yellow tail halfway and the rest is black until the tip. (her natural color, not rot or anything) i bought her because she looked so much different than the rest!

Unless you got the betta from a specialty breeder it's unlikely that it's a rare variant. You will get lucky and see some odd looking bettas at your local petsmart or wal-mart. I found a solid white betta at a Wal-Mart once and bought him right away. Prettiest betta I've ever owned.

Betta's come in many different colours, and stores often try to sell the exceptionally well-coloured ones as "rare" sometimes at a higher price. She doesn't sound particularly rare to me. Oh yes - and don't buy fish at Wal-mart. Usually they stress them out so bad between the mal-handling and children poking them all day that they usually go belly up.

I am not an expert, but I have been searching for a yellow female betta, and they seem impossible to find -- I will be interested in the answer:)

nope.
peopel breed them to look certain ways
even if you got him from a random pet store
you could have got him form a pro breeder
or any other color for that matter
sure some little things liek fin size and personality will vary
but? it is not unusual

most call this coloration "Pineapple" and in my area (Miami Florida) this is a relatively common color in pet shop fish.
