a hobo actually does not push a shopping cart, that would be a bum, hobos carry a stick with a bindle (A small bundle of items rolled up inside a blanket and carried over the shoulder or on the back; a bedroll) at the end of it, usually in the bum's cart you will find extra clothes, recycle able things he will cash in, bed roll, blankets and the sort, great question, next time just go up to one and say "hey I am curious what you got in that cart"

shoes
cans, scrap metal-to recycle-for money
bits of food salvaged from dumpsters
a collection of half-smoked cigarettes
beer bottles with 2 swigs left in the bottom
and a good book

From what I have seen, extra clothes, metal and cans because they turn them in for money, things they can exchange for food or sell.
