I have a 95 Taurus. Bought in Jan 07. Worked fine, then it started stalling on me today. Drove it like 50 miles, then on the way home, it was trying to be sluggish. Then I tried to give it gas, and it wouldn't go. Then it putted, and knocked lightly, and stalled. Happened yesterday also. Tried to restart, and it did, but only for a second. Sounded like it was revving up and putting, revving up and putting. Then it stalled out. I started pushing it home, and about half way there, it started again and drove the rest of the way home (Approx 3 blocks) it acted fine.
Could you tell me what is going on and what I need to fix it??? Thanks in advance.

This sounds to me like a classic case of a fuel system problem. I had the same symptoms once, and was frustrated by the fact that it ran fine for a while, and then acted like you describe. It turned out to be a lousy $2.00 part called the fuel filter! They probably cost more now (It happened to me 20 years ago) , but I hope this turns out to be the simple answer to what you need. A clogged or dirty fuel filter will cause the symptoms you describe, which explains why the "now it runs, now it don't; and now it runs again" effect. As the fuel pump pressure builds up and forces its' way past the filter, it makes the engine surge fast by a sudden burst of fuel. Then, as the clog restricts the gas flow; the engine dies from fuel starvation. Replace this part first, and see if that doesn't solve the problem!

The thing that caught my attention is the fact you drove 50 miles with no problem. Then it acted up,only to restart after cooling for a bit.I would check to see what happens when it's cold. It's most likely a fuel delivery problem as suggested previously, but is it possible that 1.The catalyst is getting clogged? 2.You had mistakenly put in E-85 instead of regular fuel? 3.It just simply overheated and couldn't go any further? There are no real online simple answers without actually inspecting the vehicle.

It sounds like the fuel pump is packing it in. With everything off, radio, heater, etc. and your seat belt on to avoid the chime, turn the ignition to the run position. All the red dash lights should be on and there is a faint buzzing coming from the back end of the car. It will buzz for two to five seconds then shut off. If you don't hear that, the fuel pump is not working and must be replaced.

Fuel pump relay. My 90 taurus did the same thing. I played hell trying to figure it out. Discovered it was the relay for the fuel pump. Replaced that and never had another problem with it. What will happen is the relay will over heat and shut it's self off. Once it cools down it starts to work like there is not problem. replace the bad relay and it will work fine.
