Allright, my car was having problems with the cooling fan. It would always come on because of a rigging that the previous owner did. I figured something was either wrong with the temperature sensor or the relay for the fan because the guy i bought it off of bypassed both of them and ran the fan directly to the fuse box so it was alwasy on no matter what the temperature of the car was. this weekend i replaced the temperature sensor and the relay thinking that the fan would work properly. I also thought that it would fix the problem of the non-working temperature gauge on the dashboard. Well, needless to say the temperature gauge on the dashboard still doesnt work and the car doesnt quite seem like its running up to par. I was wondering where i can find a new temperature gauge for the dashboard. I was also wondering what else could be causing my fan to turn on at the wrong times. If anyone can help me with this that would be GREAT!!! thanks in advance.

These vehicles have three separate temp. sensors. One is for grounding the cooling fan relay, the second for the computer cold enrichment circuit and the third is for the dash gauge. All 3 are within six inches of the thermostat housing. As for the wrong fan timing, these fans switch on not only when the engine temp is high, but also when the heater system is on defrost or a/c. Typically, the reason the fan does not switch on is that there is air trapped at the thermo housing. On the bypass tube and on top of the thermo housing are small brass bolts. With the engine running and hot, turn these bolts out 1/2 turn until a steady flow of coolant spurts out. As for the problem with the gauge, find the temp sender unit with a single wire and ground it. The dash gauge should go up into the red zone. If it does, replace the sender.

Hey Steve
The temp cooling sensor is a thermistor(a resistor that changes values with heat). If the prior owner bypassed the fan controls.. There are a couple of things to look at. ***The thermostat should be a minimum of 180 degree to 195 for the higher temp one. The event of multiport injectors requires the engine to operate at the correct temp for better fuel economy. ***What is the ecm/icm/computer seeing as an operating temperature... The fan is designed to come on at about 218 degrees. The fan normally gets B+ all of the time and only gets ground when the engine coolant temp switch reaches the proper temperature. You may be able to bypass a trip to the local junk yard for the temp gauge by doing a little checking on your own. This requires you to have a cold engine and remove the rad cap. top off the fluids. start the engine and physically measure the temp of the fluids with a thermometer. the other option is to get a scanner to do a reading for you. and dont rule out the scanner also...you could have a crossed wire that is shorted to ground there.

The fan should turn on when the A/C is on.The temp. sensor is a switch that allows power to ground to complete the circuit for the cooling fan when the engine reaches a high temp.

Sorry, but you own one of the crappiest cars ever built and they are rife with electrical and body problems. Your only hope is to try and find a mechanic that has suffered over these junkers in the past and has some knowledge about how to sort it out. Could be as simple as a relay or complex as bad wiring.
Good luck...
