Following 9/11--and through to the start of the Afghan war--we had the sympathy--and the support--of the Muslim world (most of it).
We had then a chance to take a positive role in the region. We could have moved forward with trade, with investments in people and economic growth. We could have given the lie to all the terrorist claims about Western imperialism.
Instead Bush chose the path of agression-and proved--in the minds of many Muslims--that the terrorist claims about an evil, imperialistic West were true.
And the blood from Bush's crimes will still be flowing 20 years from now, no matter what we do.

Iraq and Afghanistan. They together are the most important missed opportunity in Americas last twenty years. Had we been successful in establishing a secure democracy in each country, then we would have placed democracy in an area riddled with religious extremism and intolerance. Had we held the countries as military territories of the United States and ran the place ourselves for years until it was stable and then turned them over to there own governments, we would have seen a dramatically different situation. This is now going to be one of the biggest disasters in Americas history. We will not be able to afford to stay there, as war is dramatically expensive and we are technically running out of funds. Now, we will see the collapse of these two nations and war in that region for decades.

1) If Saddam was such a bad guy, he should have been eliminated in 1991-2 by GHW Bush. A relatively simple matter at the time.
2) The major missed opportunity is ignoring world wide terrorism and instead getting the US into Vietnam 2, the useless quagmire in the middle east.

Having the Judges decide the president and the peoples popular vote ignored. When cooler heads prevail and the public decides who will rule the country would have been better off. We missed the opportunity to find out what would have happened if votes counted meant something.

Biggest missed opportunity was the failure to elect Gore in 2000. We will be paying the price for that failure for years to come.
