She is a little overweight, when everyone else in our family is on the thin side. Noone ever makes comments or tries to make her feel bad, but, she makes comments about herself! She doesnt over eat, and tries to eat healthy, and is active. It hurts me to hear her make these comments about herself, as she has so many great qualities! Shes a very caring loving person.

No one in our family makes comments, but I suspect some do at school.

she's at a time when self concept is becoming especially important, so even if no one at school said anything, she is aware of the comparison of herself and girls at school, on tv, magazines, etc. if she stays active the weight should come off on its own - in time. it's common for girls to gain weight as they reach puberty, and if she hasn't had a growth spurt her height may catch up to her weight. but this is probably not going to be much consolation in the here and now! it's definitely better not to say anything about it to her; just point out her good qualities whenever possible. and speak to her doctor about what weight loss strategies are appropriate for a growing girl, as she needs good nutrition, esp calcium, at this time!

I went through that in school.
I'd say: give her compliments EVERY time she does something well, make sure she knows she beautiful, and explain to her that she needs to surround herself w/ people who bring her *up* not down.
I'm sure she's a wonderful person *inside & out* but maybe teach her some survival skills for this cruel world. Help her to defend herself & be assertive, not aggressive.
Besides, I'm sure you're doing a wonderful job. Children can be so cruel; sometimes it takes a few years for those immature ones to grow up. I think she'll be fine with a concerned, loving grandma by her side!

Your gran daughter is obviously having some self-esteem issues, try talking to her about it- or finding someone who can talk to her, like a professional. She shouldn't be talking about herself in a negative way, she is probably unstable underneath it all.
