I just turned my central air on for the first time of the year. It has been running 5 hours and there is no relief. The unit is only 5 years old, the filters are new, but the air is barely cool. I'm hoping to not have to call a technition. It is hot, hot, hot in here. Any suggestions?

Ok, I am having the same problem. My unit is about 6 yrs old. Got mine fixed. Turn on your unit let it run for a while a few hours. Then go out side and see if the unit is iced up, or any of the pipes coming out are. My pipes were iced up from the outside unit all the way to my inside unit. They will freeze up when they are low on freon. Some stores sell kits to cherge yourself which is what I did. about $20.00 here in KY. On the unit it will say how much PSI to charge with. That Should take care of your problem if thats what it is. If its froze over, than most likely your low on freon.
Hope this helps!

Sounds like it could possibly be low on freon. In which case you will need to call a technician out to recharge it. Check to make sure your condenser is working (outside part of the A/C) fan should be running, also if there is ice build up on the copper lines then you need toi have is charged. If it does it again then you should have the whole system checked for a freon leak.

Go outside and see if the unit is really running, if it is, you probably need to have the freon recharged, if it is not running you may have an electrical problem in the outside unit. Either way you'll have to call a service guy to fix it.

Central Air makes your home and evearyone in it extremely comfortable. Call a service technician or HVAC company and find out what is causing the malfunction. Its your comfort, don't be a cheapie.

You should have your A/C unit serviced at least once a year. Ask your neighbors for the name of the service they use and call them. Running your unit "as is" could create additional problems.

Check and make sure you put it on cool, and you didn't just turn the fan on. If that is ok you may need to clean the unit that is sitting outside, make sure the vents are clean on that also.

Also, most units this age are still under a parts warranty, depending on the brand. Good luck.

Maybe all you have to do is turn on the outside switch. Mine is more of a pull handle which works one way but not upside down.
